Introduction to Czech Koruna

The official name of the Czech Koruna is Koruna česká (in Czech) and the Czech Crown (in English).

Koruna in Czech means crown. A Czech koruna is divided into 100 haléřů (abbreviated as 'h'), with the singular being haléř.

However, coins with denominations of 10h, 20h, and 50h have been withdrawn and are no longer in circulation today. The symbol for the Czech Koruna is Kč, also written as Kc or K.

History of The Czech Koruna (CZK)

  • The Czech koruna was officially introduced in 1993, replacing the Czechoslovak koruna at a 1:1 exchange rate after Czechoslovakia dissolved and the Czech Republic became an independent country.

  • In 2004, the Czech Republic officially joined the European Union, but the Czech Koruna remains the national currency. As of now, this is considered one of the most stable currencies in Central Europe, with a high ability to resist inflation.

The Czech Koruna (CZK) denominations

  • Before 1892, The Gulden of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was used.

  • From 1892, The Krone was introduced and used until the Austro-Hungarian Empire dissolved in 1918.

  • In 1918, Czechoslovakia was established, and the Czechoslovak koruna became the official currency in the Czech Republic until Czechoslovakia dissolved in 1993.

Exchange Rate of the Czech Koruna (CZK)

Currently, the Czech National Bank is applying a managed floating exchange rate regime for the Czech Koruna. (CZK). The exchange rate of this currency is not fixed to any other currency on the global money market. Instead, the exchange rate will be determined by market forces.

However, the National Bank can intervene in this foreign exchange market to stabilize the exchange rate when necessary, primarily with the aim of controlling inflation. This means that the Czech National Bank can buy or sell foreign currency to maintain and stabilize the exchange rate within a certain range.

History of the Czech Koruna exchange rate

The history of the Czech Koruna (CZK) exchange rate has the following important milestones:

  • 1993: The Czech koruna was introduced and replaced the Czechoslovak koruna at a 1:1 exchange rate. This was an important step in the formation of an independent monetary system for the Czech Republic after the dissolution of Czechoslovakia.

  • 1999: The Czech koruna was fully floated, allowing its exchange rate to be determined by the market without direct intervention from the central bank.In 1999, the Czech koruna was fully floated, allowing its exchange rate to be determined by the market without direct intervention from the central bank.

  • The 2000s: The Czech Koruna began to stabilize and increase in value thanks to the country's strong economic development, particularly in the industrial and export sectors.

  • November 2013: The Czech National Bank (CNB) implemented intervention measures to weaken the exchange rate of the Koruna. They implemented monetary stimulus measures to prevent this currency from appreciating excessively, which would affect exports.

  • 2017: The Czech National Bank removed the exchange rate cap in a special monetary meeting, following higher-than-expected inflation.

  • From 2018 to now: The Koruna continues to maintain a managed floating exchange rate regime, often fluctuating around 0.043 USD/CZK. This indicates the relative stability of the currency in the context of the regional and global economy.

These developments indicate the process of growth and stability of the Czech Koruna amidst changing economic and political contexts.

The value of the Czech Koruna and the discussion about adopting the Euro

The Czech Republic joined the European Union (EU) in 2004 under the Maastricht Treaty, with the obligation to join the eurozone once it meets the integration criteria. However, to this day, the country still maintains the Czech koruna (CZK) and has not yet joined the Exchange Rate Mechanism II (ERM II), a necessary step before switching to the Euro.

In 2010, the Czech Republic had plans to adopt the Euro, but the government indefinitely suspended these plans in 2005. Although the Czech economy is in a good position and many experts believe the country is qualified to switch to the euro, the adoption still faces many obstacles.

One of the main reasons is the lack of support from the people. According to a survey in April 2014, only 16% of the Czech population supported replacing the koruna with the Euro. Similarly, another survey by CVVM (Public Opinion Research Center) in April 2018 showed that only 20% of the Czech population over 15 years old agreed with adopting the Euro.

Some reasons why people do not agree with using the Euro are:

  • The stability of the koruna: People feel that the koruna has brought them economic stability, and they do not want to face changes that could pose risks.

  • Risk of losing sovereignty: Many Czechs are concerned that adopting the euro could lead to a loss of control over the country's monetary policy.

  • Global economic situation: Global economic fluctuations also make people more cautious about changing the currency.

In the current context, the adoption of the euro in the Czech Republic remains a controversial topic. Although the economy has potential, the lack of support from the people and other factors still hinder this process.
